Ueli Steck dies on Everest

Swiss climber Ueli Steck has died while acclimatising for an ascent of Everest via the West Ridge/Hornbein Couloir route with Tenzing (Tenji) Sherpa and without supplemental oxygen. A proponent of active acclimatisation, Steck was apparently climbing to 7000 m when he fell.

His achievements have been extraordinary. Aged 41, Steck had won two Piolet D’Ors, one for a solo ascent of Annapurna. He also held the speed record for soloing the North Face of the Eiger in 2:22:50 secs. The video shows his incredible style and drive:
