[…] New Zealand / You are eligible to apply to New Zealand if you are a UK citizen and a UK graduate. You can apply for a post as a House Surgeon or a Registrar. House Surgeons are roughly equivalent to FY2’s, but Kiwis may spend several extra years at that grade getting experience in a wide range of specialities. Registrars are equivalent to CT1/ST1 and upwards. As specialty training in New Zealand is typically five years rather than seven, you will be worked quite hard at Registrar level and given somewhat more responsibility. However, it is a great way to get experience. Sometimes UK doctors will start out as House Surgeons and then choose to join the Registrar rota once they have found their feet. Applications for New Zealand are usually in April/May with offers in August for end of November (House Surgeons)/early December (Registrar) starts. Apply direct to hospitals via the RMO Office. After getting an offer, you can then apply for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council, get your visa and indemnity and finally book your flights. If you are going for longer than one year, you will require a medical for the visa, but that can also be done in New Zealand and your visa subsequently extended. Keep all the receipts, as the hospital will reimburse you. For more information on working in NZ, see our guide. […]

[…] We’ve had a few emails from AM readers regarding some posts that have been doing the rounds on social media recently. The first is an infographic on your chances of dying doing a particular extreme sport. The second, a well-written article from Howie Chong on why you should cycle without a helmet or – from our understanding of the post – why perhaps you should instead walk or drive with one. The quantification of risk is a key part of being an expedition medic, but we here at Adventure Medic HQ are rather dubious about such big generalisations – after all, there is a bit of a difference between pukka whitewater kayaking and a day out at your local outward bound centre. Still, we’d be interested to hear all your thoughts on the Facebook page or on the Forum. You might also want to check out our own article on Risk Management for Adventure.
[…] If a UK humanitarian worker was to become infected “in the field”, their care would initially be coordinated by the humanitarian organisation they were working for. In Sierra Leone it is likely they would be cared for by NHS staff in the new treatment centre for health care workers in Kerry Town. This facility consists of 12 beds and is clinically led by Infectious Disease specialists from the UK. Decisions regarding repatriation to the UK would be made on a case by case basis. So far there has only been one UK healthcare worker infected who was evacuated back to the UK by the military, the day after testing positive. There may be potential for the use of vaccines and novel treatments in British healthcare workers but the development and supply of these drugs are still at an early stage (see our previous article on Ebola).
[…] It is a tough trip to do anyway, without having the additional responsibilities of being a first time expedition medic, probably also having your own first experience of high altitude. It is a brave decision to take it on as your first trip, however it is probably the one that you will be offered. Sometimes you can negotiate – I got my start by agreeing that I would do a Kili trip later in the year if they let me go on a Sahara Desert Trek first. Once you have done Kili though it can open doors to new work, as you have proved yourself at altitude and will likely have gained some experience of treating altitude sickness, although many companies may just see it as an opportunity to offer you more Kili dates. (You can also have a look at Adventure Medic’s dedicated Guide to Kilimanjaro.) […]
