Sept 2012 / The Machermo Porter Shelter and Rescue post accepts applications from volunteer doctors and medical elective students to serve the acute needs of porters and trekkers during the two Himalayan trekking seasons (March-May and Sept-Nov). The village takes about a week to reach and involves a light plane flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, and several days trek, initially along the Everest Base Camp route, before branching off onto the Gokyo trail. Most applicants are GPs/A&E doctors, but applicants from other backgrounds are considered if you have altitude/expedition medicine experience.

Sept 2012 / This August five doctors from Northern Ireland will be taking on some of the Alps most formidable mountains on bicycles including the legendary Galibier. They are part of a group raising money for the spinal injury charity Aspire and the Cure and Action for Tay Sachs Foundation. Far from professional cyclists, the average weight of the group is a well-insulated 92kg, 23kg heavier than Bradley Wiggins.
